Both medals are awarded annually by CILIP: the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals.

The Shadowing scheme engages thousands of children and young people in reading the books on the shortlist every year. The Shadowing Site contains details about the judging process and shadowing scheme. RNIB works with CILIP to ensure that the shortlisted titles are available in alternative formats so that visually impaired can play a full part as a shadow judge.

In Young Reading Lives you can see how Ellie was excited when her large package of Carnegie titles in braille arrives in giant boxes! and also see a Carnegie Shadowing book group discussion at New College Worcester.
